Abi Howell

Abi Howell (she/they) is a visual artist who primarily works within the mediums of film, photography, and clothing, sometimes finding herself at the intersection of all three. She is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary arts at the University of New Mexico and is set to graduate in May 2023.

Howell moved to Albuquerque from Houston with her mom when she was seven and spent the majority of her childhood and teenage years making short films and experimental videos, usually starring her friends and shot on a borrowed camcorder. She used film as a diary of sorts. The subject matter she covered in her work changed over time as her knowledge base expanded. Influenced by her time at Evergreen State College where she studied media arts and sustainability, Howell’s attention turned away from producing script-driven movies and towards more documentary-style ones. She is intrigued by the seemingly ordinary aspects of daily life and uses her skills as a filmmaker to showcase the intricacies of the mundane.

Howell has always thought of film as sacred. To her, it is a medium where she has no choice but to be completely expressive and brutally honest. She has experienced firsthand how therapeutic film can be as a medium to both monitor and influence the artist and viewers’ emotions. Authenticity lays the groundwork for all of Howell’s artistic endeavors.
